Panasonic GH4 – Features and Thoughts

Micro Four Thirds Sensor and Lens Mount – new evolution, part IV. First to say advantages of GH4 and differences between gh4 vs gh3 vs gh2:

  1. 4:2:2/10-bit output via micro HDMI
  2. 16 megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor (New Sensosr)
  3. UHD 4K 3840×2160 30p/24p
  4. Cinematic DCI 4K 4096×2160 video at 24p
  5. Better electronic viewfinder
  6. Full HD OLED monitor (The GH4’s touchscreen monitor is HD (3“ OLED with 1,036,000 dots))

One additional Feature – YAGH

gh4-full panasonic

Panasonic Lumix GH4 4K camera come optionally with YAGH. YAGH is broadcast adapter. The YAGH composition adds XLR audio inputs, timecode inputs and HDMI & 3G-SDI output. Only the DMW-YAGH add-on base can output 4K (uncompressed, 10bit 4:2:2) from the GH4. If you choose to record internally, then it continues to be 8-bit internal, but with much lower compression possibilities than ever before.

Cinematic DCI

Video can be recorded in a variety of formats (standards), from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. Panasonic love to follow cinema standards, and for me, this is one of the main ofeature in the camera: Cinematic DCI 4K 4096×2160 video at 24p and UHD 4K 3840×2160 30p/24p. What this mean.

UHD = Ultra HD. 4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 lines

Cinematic DCI? The Digital Cinema Initiatives consortium established a standard resolution of 4096 pixels × 2160 lines (8.8 megapixels, aspect ratio ~17:9) for 4K film projection

The organization was formed in March 2002 by the following studios:
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer[1]
Paramount Pictures
Sony Pictures Entertainment
20th Century Fox
Universal Studios
The Walt Disney Company
Warner Bros

YouTube and Vimeo allow a maximum upload resolution of 4096×3072 pixels (12.6 megapixels)

Similar cameras with Cinematic DCI:
RED EPIC – released in 2011 and records at 5K RAW (5120×2700 13.8 megapixels) & DCI 4K (4096×2160, 8.8 megapixels)

The rolling shutter on the GH4 is 50% quicker than before so in league with a proper cinema camera like the Canon C500

Panasonic GH4 vs Blackmagic Production Camera 4K (Panasonic GH4 vs Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera)

First there is a difference between the price: 2000 vs 4000. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K has a larger sensor. 2. 12-bit RAW vs 10-bit 4:2:2 – advantage of Blackmagic.

Wolfcrow.com has done a test info consider these two cameras. There are results:

Production Camera wins – Sensor size and ISO, Video and Features. GH4 wind – Audio and Price

3 main question what we need to ask:

  1. Image stabilization within (during the shooting)
  2. What about focus during the shooting
  3. Low light performance
